There are many types of hair colour products, which can generally be divided into three main categories:
Permanent Hair Colour
Permanent hair colour is able to remove much of the hair’s original pigment, allowing the hair to become lighter. The colour molecules penetrate deeply into the cortex, delivering long-lasting results that can remain for several months. Because permanent colouring has the greatest impact on the hair’s strength, it is essential to choose effective products and rely on a stylist who has a strong understanding of how to analyse and assess the hair’s structure.
Demi-Permanent Hair Colour
Demi-permanent colour is a semi-permanent hair dye that removes some of the hair’s original pigment, but does not lighten the hair. Its colour molecules reach the outer area of the cortex, making it gentler on the hair than permanent dye while lasting longer than semi-permanent colour. Results typically last around 6–8 weeks. At MOGA, we recommend alternating demi-permanent and permanent colour for grey coverage in order to help preserve hair quality. Even so, choosing the right type of colour for your hair condition remains essential.
Semi-Permanent Hair Colour
Semi-permanent colour does not create an oxidation reaction within the hair. It does not remove the hair’s original pigment and cannot lighten the hair. Instead, the colour remains only on the cuticle, or outer layer of the hair. Because it contains no ammonia, it is considered the gentlest option and is less damaging than permanent hair colour. The colour usually begins to fade after around 4–5 washes and typically lasts about 2–3 weeks.

As hair colour pricing depends on each client’s hair condition and colouring history, we recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation. We also advise a patch test on the inner arm or behind the ear before the actual service to check for any allergic reaction and ensure the treatment is suitable before proceeding.

Please note that hair colour results may change after the service depending on how the hair is cared for at home. As this varies from person to person, the salon is unable to take responsibility for changes caused after the service.
If you have any concerns about your hair colour result, you may return for an initial consultation with your stylist within 3 days of your appointment. If colour correction is required, an appointment must be made within 7 days from the original service date. Any correction must be carried out by the same stylist who performed the original service; changing stylists is not possible.*
*The original stylist is the person who assessed your hair condition before colouring and prepared the colour formula used. They therefore understand your hair colour details and hair condition best, and are the most suitable person to carry out any necessary colour correction.
What to Know Before Your Hair Colour Appointment
How to Prepare Before Hair Colouring
- Before every colour service, please inform your stylist of your hair colour and chemical service history, such as perms or straightening, as these can affect both the colour plan and the final result.
- For your safety, please clearly inform your stylist of any concerns in advance, such as cuts or irritation on the scalp, itching, or any history of allergy to P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) or P-Toluenediamine (PTD).
- Please keep your hair clean before your appointment and avoid using styling products. If you will be having colour with root bleaching, shampooing immediately beforehand is not necessary.
- Coloured hair requires ongoing care and regular touch-up appointments to help maintain even colour, especially in cases involving bleaching.
Does Hair Colour Change Hair Permanently, and What Can Make Colour Fade Faster?
Hair colour does not remain exactly the same permanently, as all colour fades naturally over time. However, colouring can permanently alter the hair’s pigment depending on the type of dye used, as follows:
- Permanent hair colour permanently changes the pigment inside the hair. As the colour fades, the hair does not return to its original natural shade. Much of the colour change over time happens when the colour pigment oxidises through contact with copper and other elements in water.
- Demi-Permanent and Semi-Permanent colour gradually fade over time, although Demi-Permanent colour may not wash out completely.
Understanding Hair Structure Before Colouring
Hair is made up of three main parts:
- The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair. It plays an important role in retaining moisture and protecting the hair from external factors. If the cuticle is damaged, colour may not adhere well and can fade more quickly.
- The cortex is the main body of the hair, made up of densely packed keratin cells and the hair’s natural pigment. When these keratin cells are damaged, the hair loses strength and elasticity. Most colouring reactions take place in the cortex rather than on the cuticle, which is why the condition of this layer greatly affects bleaching and colour results. If the cortex is weak, the hair may break more easily or fail to hold colour properly.
- The medulla is the innermost and thinnest part of the hair. It has a hollow structure and helps support the overall form of the hair.

Aftercare Advice Following Hair Colour
To help your hair colour last longer and maintain its shine, it is important to avoid factors that may cause the colour to fade more quickly, including:
- Hair condition: If the hair is weak or damaged, colour will fade more quickly. Regular treatments or hair masks are recommended to help maintain hair health.
- Heat: Washing with very warm water, as well as frequent blow-drying, straightening, or curling with heat, can cause colour to fade faster. Cool air or lower heat settings are recommended instead.
- Chlorine: Water containing chlorine, whether from tap water or swimming pools, can cause hair colour to fade more easily. If exposure is unavoidable, wearing a swim cap and treating the hair immediately afterwards is recommended.
- Daily care: Use shampoo and conditioner designed for colour-treated hair, avoid washing too frequently, and apply products that help protect the hair from sunlight or UV exposure when outdoors.
If you plan to bleach and retouch the roots, it is best to do so before the regrowth exceeds 2 inches. Longer root regrowth is more complex to bleach, may result in uneven colour, and can also affect pricing and final results.
Notes: In general, hair colour begins to fade or root regrowth becomes visible within 4–6 weeks. To keep your colour looking fresh and beautiful, we recommend booking your next maintenance or colour appointment in around 1–1.5 months.
